Getting into the Modern Muse Mindset

(the work you do in addition to choosing lingerie)

We all have moments in our lives where the way we see ourselves changes. There are so many things to think about when you’re thinking about getting a boudoir photo shoot for yourself, like what wardrobe will make me feel most like myself? Do I want my hair done differently than usual or like me, but better?  It’s important that your boudoir photoshoot experience isn’t hyper focused on wardrobe and styling; it’s more about using those things to frame and to support the idea of who you want to see in the portraits and it includes asking questions such as “How does seeing myself make me feel?”

TO be honest, all of us have anxieties over how we look – and how we look in photographs.  And we tend to zero in on the things we already have decided aren’t enough, or are too much, or too squishy or not squishy enough.  And that’s what we look for when we quickly scan photos of ourselves for the first time. Am I right?

So let’s not do that.

Sounds easy? All you have to do is turn it on. Feel it. Are you feeling it?  What? It’s not that easy? What is this I am supposed to feel to turn on? Yeah. You’re right. It’s not.  We spend a lot of time in worry, planning or distraction mode.  And not that much time being present and feeling.  Sitting with feelings.  Checking in on the sensations we are feeling.

So how do we start paying attention to the sensation in our bodies?

This is exercise for your sensual self. To expand into more, take up space and make sound in physicality; let it lead with its desires! It’s all about feeling radiant- not rushed or stressed out.

The goal is to let your sensual self take up space. To expand into more. To take up sound and space. Physical space. To let your sensual self take the lead. Listen to them. What do they need? What do they want? How do they move?

This is about feeling and being radiant.  Not rushed.  Little mindset shifts that can help you on the way!

One of my favorite things to do when I want myself (and sometimes others) pull apart from the self-critic and practice self-compassion – Put the qualifier “I’m having the thought that” in front of any negative statements about yourself.

For example – I’m having the thought that I’m too fat to do a shoot like this.”  Or “I’m having the thought that I am too old.”  Or I’m having the thought that I’m too vain because I want to experience this.”

This experience of being seen is powerful!

  • Swap your judgement for kindness.
  • Don’t force anything.
  • Laugh when you want to.
  • Be gentle with yourself through this process
  • Accept what arises.
  • Don’t dwell in comparison.  You are wonderfully you. No one else comes close.

Remember that you live in your body. You aren’t just the physical being, there’s so much more than the exterior! During our consultation before your Modern Muse boudoir photoshoot – which will be different for every client but always centered around their favorite parts of themselves – I’ll ask you to think about how you feel toward these features and then decide on one specific emotion or feeling associated with each part: kindness towards fingertips; gratitude for hip bone(s); contentment at legs…

Remembering this truth puts me into an empowering mindset to focus on what is fantastic. What is lovable. What is beautiful.  And then you’ll be able to see the whole picture – the beautiful you.
