What is the Difference Between Boudoir & Glamour Photography?

Trying to figure out if you want to do a boudoir photography session or a glamour portrait session? Not sure which is which? The dividing line between glamour and boudoir is indeed subjective. The terms glamour and boudoir both imply a specific things, but I want to use this post to explain how I see and interpret the difference.

Glamour is about making images that more people will see. These are images that will be shared and seen by many people. Usually you are fully clothed; wardrobe and styling is an important part of the image. ?The subject (you) is actively aware that she is being photographed – we can see this because of the eye contact with the camera, and subsequently the viewer of the image. Legacy portraits are usually more formal – and create a timeless portrait. ?Your face, which is the focus of the portrait, is kept in soft, even and flattering light.

Boudoir photography doesn’t just mean that you are in your underwear. It’s an approach to creating a suite of portraits that is more personal, more sensual, more evocative, more mysterious and more alluring than a typical portrait session. The audience for a boudoir shoot is also usually smaller – these images are usually enjoyed by just a few people including the client. Lighting, while still flattering, is typically more varied in a boudoir session than in a glamour session.

Of course there are some images and sessions that overlap, and are both of these categories.

Either way, your session with Modern Muse (be it a personal branding shoot, a glamour session, or boudoir) is a fun and affirming experience. And you’ll look beautiful!

Modern Muse sessions are not just about T&A. At your Modern Muse session, you choose what you’re photographed in. And if you need any help figuring out what?s best for you, we are happy to offer suggestions.
You might want sweeping and epic gowns (and have some rent-the-runway credits). You might be all all about showcasing your fitness and physique. You might be aiming for seductive and sultry. Maybe it’s a mix of different ideas. I’ll photograph you in whatever you choose to bring in. We have a few items here at the studio that we can add to supplement your wardrobe. And as you can see (link) we can work magic with just some fabric and the right pose and lighting.

At your Modern Muse session, you set the tone for how modest or how revealing you’d like your session to be. These are portraits of you – every session is unique and planned around you vision.

Modern Muse portrait sessions can include, but aren’t limited to

  • glamour portraits, mostly of your beautiful face (like a Vanity Fair portrait shoot)
  • Three-quarter and full-length shots showing your curves
  • Silhouettes, back-lit images
  • And for the more daring, implied nude shots (think hands, sheets and shadows!)

Modern Muse is celebration of you. You can be bold, modest, sensual, funny, empowered, limitless, joyful, and always you. You don?t need to diet or work out. You need to fully inhabit your body with love.
