Outdoor Boudoir Photography Inspiration
After what I am referring to as the Lost Spring (in regards to the ‘soggy bunker’ of the 4th trimester and the perpetual raincloud that enveloped New England this year), I am fully ready to embrace summer time. ?And it announced itself loud and clear this past week as temperatures rose into the 90s. Even the porch shade is hot. Hot. HOT.
And now that it’s delightful outside again, and knowing that this will not last, I started thinking about outdoor boudoir photography. ?It?s daring and even more intentionally vulnerable than doing a boudoir session indoors. There’s a challenge to balancing the privacy of the shoot in a public setting. The contrast in textures is amazing, but the real force in these images is the open context and ambiguous story.
Outdoor Boudoir Photography in the City
While I love shooting at the studio where conditions don’t vary much day to day or season to season, the call of photographing outdoors is here. ?I love our Fort Point neighborhood, but I do miss the open fields and cool forests and the smell of country summer (sweet) compared to the smell of city summer (sour). ?When getting ourselves out of the city isn’t a possibility there are others ways to capture the drama of shooting outdoors.
Here’s a list of places to shoot boudoir in the city
- Rooftops
- Balconies
- Backyards
- Boat
- Early morning or late evening
- Open windows
Sometime about 20 years ago, I did an outdoor boudoir shoot! It was shot on film. ?I’m not sure where the negatives are at the moment, though please rest assured that if they turn up, they will not make into the public sphere. ?I mean that I actually had a friend photograph me in nature, mostly nude. At the time I didn’t think about it as boudoir photography. ?My frame of reference was the nude in the landscape genre and I was likely thinking of the Judy Dater portrait of Imogen Cunningham and the Twinka Thiebaud. Apparently the Dater image was inspired by the Thomas Hart Benton take on Persephone. ?Cool! ?So much to unpack about the history of voyeurism.
