So many people tiptoe around the idea of a boudoir session for weeks, months, even years. They worry about how they’ll look in photographs, whether they’ll know how to pose, what they’ll wear, or whether they’ll feel comfortable being vulnerable in front of a camera. It’s completely normal to feel nervous about putting yourself in a situation where you’re being seen so intimately, especially if you’re not used to celebrating your body in this way.
These concerns are incredibly common, and they can make booking a session feel like a much bigger decision than it actually needs to be. There can be excitement and anxiety at the same time, and sometimes the fear of stepping outside your comfort zone is enough to keep you from ever experiencing it. But boudoir can also be an opportunity to quiet those insecurities, let go of the pressure to look or act a certain way, and see yourself with a little more confidence, compassion, and trust.
One of the things boudoir photographers hear most from boudoir clients, after all is said and done, is that everyone should experience this at least once in their lifetime! We also get repeat clients because after your first session, any of those insecurities and fears have evaporated. You know you are worthy.
Let’s look at some of the most common concerns that I hear from people who have tiptoed up to the line and are still feeling a little skeptical.
1. I am not comfortable with my ____.
Let’s say it out loud. None of us are perfect. Not a single one. There is no such thing as too heavy, too thin, too old, too many stretch marks, etc. Our bodies carry us through our lives. They are part of who we are. And they are always changing. And you are ALL equally beautiful! I have insecurities too. We all do.
You might have a script in your head about what is wrong with your body. And that is the power of being able to see yourself through our artistic lens. To see yourself as a strong, badass, and resilient human who is gorgeous and worthy in their own way.
2. I don’t know how to pose.
Listen here! We are not expecting you to know how to pose. As a professional boudoir photographer, we guide you through all of this!? You don’t need to know how to pose, it’s my job to pose you with the best lighting and through the best lenses. I will direct you through the whole process all the way down to the way you tilt your head and what the heck to do with your hands. And feet. 😉
I can demo poses for you and guide you on where to place your hands, arms, and legs. Where to look, what to do. This is a team effort! We ask that you trust the process, fully show up, and commit. All you need to do is show up and let me handle the rest.
I’ll be honest: you may come into the session feeling a bit awkward, but you’ll gradually get more comfortable with each boudoir pose, and eventually you’ll own every inch of your gorgeous self. All of this is to say that we don’t expect you to be a professional model to have a boudoir session!
3. I’m afraid I won’t like the photos of myself.
Acknowledge that we all scan images of ourselves actively looking for the things we don’t like so we can confirm in our minds that our bodies are flawed. So if your mind goes there, accept that as the momentary distraction that is it and zoom out to see the whole you.?
